tree houses parties in these houses and it was it was amazing funny short aside funny story on that as we were leaving one party to go to another again fifteen feet of snow so cold so so hard so much that it freezes your nose notifying students of this this thing though but rather read life decision I think I speak for most people in my class but you know what the heck that really meant okay that that's gonna happen fine yes but when we arrived we essentially had three classes ahead of us many of which were angry at the school for destroying the social life and taking away all of our funding and we had all these people said the school was so much better before this happened and now the school sucks so you know we had a better part of at least three years of the archive the bet okay I guess that they say it sucks I guess the school sucks yes it was this weird time of transition clearly and it's come up with a bunch of conversations I've had it is no question was the right decision is no questions was much better for it but it was an interesting time in but you know like anything it's a lot of trial and error and you have to sort of get through that transition phase we had a lot of angry people but by the time my senior year rolled around it you know we all looked around and said maybe this place doesn't suck H. C. L. love that to know and I would guest on anyone else's show I just wanted to be in that studio behind the board on the Mike as much as I could so much so that I got a job my senior year at W. O. U. R. in Utica and I was working overnight weekends midnight to six AM on the weekends on the air so I said yeah I'm a professional I'm getting paid to do this on a real radio stations I thought I was well on my way and as I as I always say if I had wanted to continue to make six dollars an hour in live in Utica that I could just continue to do that I think I had grander aspirations then and no offense to you to gets a lovely city and one of the one of the key things that keeps going up on the shows how much people don't appreciate the surrounding areas when that when the students there but making six dollars an hour it was local television station in the Bronx who had a job opening is essentially it as a Jack of all trades reporter editor producer you name it covering all sports in the Bronx from little league all the way up to the New York Yankees so it was I mean it was a dream job yeah and that one that I thought was quite reject the hiring manager said you know one of the fifteen references I mean they put me through the wringer write a one page synopsis of why you want this job Travis I put more time and energy into that one page then I think I did my entire senior thesis I want jobs you know sure and I can hardly be hard on the spot you're perfect for the job and offer me five fifty an hour how will the connection all about the house and connections a fellow classmate of mine Eric Isaac class of ninety nine I had just started as an assistant media planner at an ad agency called those out and I was lamenting to him the fact that was you know we're now it's October I think after graduation I still have a job and my mom was ready to kick me out so I didn't get a job and he said well we're hiring assistant media planners here and I said let's sounds interesting what's an assistant media planners he said I'm not really sure yet but we get we get free magazine so it's pretty cool so landed in an interview for a job at this ad agency for assisted me to plant I looked at it I said media I work in media I think I could turn that around and ended up getting a job working with ESPN as a client and the job which I did sensually working in some capacity throughout the rest of my career in advertising and in media planning and buying the way I explain it is if you see an ad the media planning and media buying people the ones that put it there so deciding who that is trying to reach what's the best prospects or what's the best most efficient way to put an ad in front of a person is essentially the job that I worked in for the remaining you know the following twenty years of my career to the point where I know I've worked at several ad agencies doing that and now lead that process for the National Football League that is fascinating I've thought many times about how that process works in the background but this very interesting and very cool the way I explain it a lot when if I talk to students and I've done a lot of guest lectures in various schools in the Boston area and people ask why do I like that the work like I do one of the things I I say is the liberal arts education at Hamilton in particular I was an American studies major which is like at the time yeah this is pretty open curriculum and so this is that was the most liberal arts major I could find because I took literally classes from every discipline across the campus and that's one of things I like about this job is it's part psychology it's part sociology it's part data analytics more and more and more as as the world continues to evolve in that space it's create you know it's very creative space so there's there's elements of all parts of the brain that you use for the job and that's probably what's kept me doing it for as long as I have that's awesome so does that mean that you are you and your team are responsible for choosing the spots that aired during NFL games are you choosing where the NFL advertises themselves elsewhere or both both both yes so we have with our partners fox ESPN NBC so forth we have inventory in those games in my team decides what runs in those games manages that inventory and then also then spends money on the league's behalf trying to essentially recruit new fence any marketer in any business has has two main goals protect your core customer and make them even more loyal and go out and find more customers new customers and the same thing for us with fans is deep in what we call it you know we talk about fan avidity deep insanity make people even more fans and then go out and find the next generation of friends so it's sort of a dual pronged challenge that makes sense that's fascinating how does it feel to have who had gone to the school and think about who I could actually talk to I just I always knew it but police have seen the list of there are really just a lot of interesting people that went to the school such that maybe that would be that maybe that's the idea is that the hook is Hamilton but then everyone goes off and does these different things so I like to explore I think similar to what you're doing with that I got in a different restaurant your path what what was what impact does the four years I'm not on my campus have or how many how many years on the campus how did that impact what you did then the idea had I known was just how do I hope you know title together is just I'm just fascinated by do you think back to starting there right we all start with either a dreamer thought of what that time in the school's gonna be like and what you do beyond and and we obviously learned so much hindsight sort of an interesting thing is I like to ask is there any wish you had me and it's a critical times by soft also met with some financial troubles because of all that so I was spent I would spend at the start of every semester every school year in the business office pleading my case and I kicked me out and promising the check was in the mail walking on a campus that felt quite affluent right now I think everyone here is rich I'm not rich so I was embarrassed by that right now try to keep that a secret why'd you miss the first class I had a thing idea is that since going on them but meanwhile is it no I promised my mom says the checks in the mail you know tonight it was dealing with that but if someone else had some other issues right up I had to talk to actually marry men in the class head of me who talks about our talk to Kenny Gilmore you know both told stories about coming out on campus and and what that was like one in the nineties one you know fairly recently and what a challenge that was in the personal struggles there how many people come to the campus not willing to talk about that and not realizing that there are many others don't I mean it's just is it runs the gamut it's been real that this that's probably been the biggest eye she ran this when I was there she was running student activities and she elevated her career since then right six hope but getting to reconnect with her was great and the stories that she was telling the gamut the class with talking to the class of nineteen fifty six I had about ten members of the class of nineteen fifty six on a zoom together I had got tipped off to the fact that they were doing because of the time out of that school and living in that room I was struck just how open the school is you know was seven at issue clock whatever may have been I was walking around and through the athletic center and checking that out remembering for the town had their every doors open up you know walked over the you know walked in a well and almost certainly not going to be walking alone sure enough open up and just remembering just how you know what access everybody has their and just how appreciative it was you know it it's cliche but you know you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone and that sort of thing and I think every sort of instead like they covered a sort of remember that I mean literally I would stop at places and just remember a conversation I had with
