of small community tight knit community campus feel so I was looking at a lot of the NESCAC schools actually come in and similar to Savannah either of you are both would you be open to talking a little bit about what the structure of the philosophy is behind policy and how you have found that to be so I obviously it's designed to be helpful and to be a positive influence on your college search and your college experience or have you found that to be the case but I can definitely see if that policy is founded around the idea that I believe back in the eighties and nineties there was a student who went to college and they had struggled for a bit and then they eventually dropped out and they said I've been in the day that they would have dropped out had they had a policy and so that really spurred the foundation for policy and so now it's groups of 10 students from respective cities that are matched with colleges that are usually out of state and usually they are student leaders who are very active in their home communities and are always looking to make an impact in other communities that are selected and so likely Johnny and I were both chosen perspective cities I myself am I am in Johnny from Boston and on campus that looks like just like a little family actually has definitely been one of the very critical aspects of my experience at Hamilton just having that people I know from my city people who understand the culture shock people understand the difficulties adjusting to college life from high school who I got to know over the span of several months before coming to Hamilton so I developed a really close bonds with them and we're still very close friends to this day and again I like I don't know if I could have gone through my academic career without my posse what are you gonna that whole experience coming right into college a member like freshman orientation it feels like it was 2 days ago I'm just coming here and having my policy having my group the minute I stepped on the campus maybe feel really comfortable here knowing that I had a group to fall back on we're there for each other no matter kind of what goes on we truly are like a mini family within the family I would say so it's been great to have that yeah and just in general I think that to see my friends to see all the old buildings and just be like surrounded by familiarity however testing frequently all the new guidelines the code restrictions it definitely altered my perspective and that's just something that can't be it's unavoidable at this point due to the pandemic but definitely have forced me to adjust my lifestyle on campus just to be more accommodating and be more cognizant of how lucky we are to be on a campus like this that we are able to go to classes in person that we're able to really still have that college experience despite all the circumstances going on but yeah I've just had to make a few adjustments but it hasn't been incredibly difficult I still find ways to reach out to my friends I still find ways to coordinate meetings with my professors and have my classes and I don't know I'm just grateful that I can still have this experience despite everything yeah I think I think grateful is the key word here I'm I'm feeling very appreciative as a senior I think back to my junior year I was supposed to be abroad the entire year and I was in DC for the fall semester and I was in Madrid and had to come home a couple months early so that was of course really tough and then we adjusted to online classes I'm taking online classes with professors in another country so the whole time difference thing was kind of crazy on top of just all that zoom fatigue especially at first we weren't really used to this this holes in world so having gone through a couple months of that and just the whole beginning a pandemic it's been a learning experience for everybody and I think that's why I'm just grateful to be back on campus today I was just really looking forward to being back on the hill seeing my friends eventually seeing some of my professors in person to which has been great so yeah I think the key word again is grateful and I'm just happy to be back even though the experiences are a little bit different accidents that there is a social distancing there's the masks there's the capacity limits in certain spaces but I think it's it's a lot better than being in my bedroom talking to people through facetime so I appreciate having those face to face interactions and just having the the time the experience to be back on the hill once again 2 of you are among a number of seniors who have been working with a variety of folks to try to create more opportunities for the seniors to be together and to celebrate this experience and celebrate the culmination of this experience so can you talk a little bit about why you've been doing that and what your efforts of look like and what you foresee the outcome I think it's definitely important just that word community really means a lot to me and it's one of the reasons I came to Hamilton because I felt I walked on campus and I immediately felt like a sense of community like everyone's friendly everyone was willing to incorporate in whatever they were doing and so coming back to campus during a covert semester it's been difficult to build that community I feel like at the beginning everyone was sort of kind of stuck in the rooms all the time they weren't sure how to navigate the new reality on campus and so we were just on him all the time and not much was going on and so working alongside the senior plan committee has lost an assembly I've had the opportunity to like work with organizations on campus to work with other students to make sure that there are ways that we're engaged in people on campus and my students as well so that we don't feel like we're also isolated I think that's a big thing during the at we all just feel like kind of alone sometimes and I want to help me create that sense of community so that it's not I don't know it's just not as isolating yeah that makes sense it's actually funny Savannah super involved in a lot of the same circles actually students simply senior planning committee I'm a both are is on campus to us I think we've gone to see a lot of these things sort of first hand and I think it's given us great insight to be able to canning things are changing the rules are changing pretty quickly CDC guidelines change by the day it seems so at first we thought certain things might not be possible we didn't know if we could even have an in person commencement and removed for we're moving forward with plans to do that so I think that's really exciting we just try to be prepared with whatever type opportunities we can you know sort of have for our classmates but even down to looking at senior week we didn't know if we could actually go through with having in person senior week or having some days to celebrate leading up to commencement but we sat down as a senior class planning committee and we really thought through a lot of these different problems we sat down we talked as a comedian figured out okay how can we make this happen can we do it safely so we talked about the different ways that we might do that one of them was to plan activities around the different cold alert status levels so we have or we're working on it right now we have activities will be planned for green status blue status yellow status just to really kind of have all of our ducks in a row and have all of our options out there talking about testing all of the seniors every day throughout that we also don't know especially with the vaccine rollout happening a lot faster than I anticipated personal things again changing by the day we ruled out guests before for commencement there are talks about it we don't know what we can do yet but assuming people can get vaccinated things might change pretty quickly so I think a lot of the the normal things that we would be doing in a senior year sort of China's escalated like times 1000 because of cold enough
