no pressure so to get started let's start from the beginning what brought you to Hamilton and what does being the president of Hamilton College look like so I've had this my fourth year here I knew Hamilton I used to work at Cornell University was not too far down the road so I always knew of Hamilton this is terrific a liberal arts college that was not too far away when I learned that they were doing a search for a new president now something I was interested and I had some preliminary conversations with the search firm then this and then met with the summer search committee and just the more I learned about school the more excited I got and I've fallen in love with it it's been great so that's what that's what brought me here and it's been an extraordinary experience right that's probably hard for you to even describe but what does the day to day of being a college president even entail so I always smile and when people ask that question because every day is different actually 1 of the great things about my job there there's never a dull moment because things are constantly changing and evolving there is a pattern add to the year in some respects of course every year begins with the entry of a new class in the last year we were incredibly fortunate applications were up 34 percent that allowed us to be very selective our acceptance rate was only 16 percent and every year were recruiting just a fantastic students to join a wonderful community so that's that's the start and there's a pattern to that admission process in fact we're doing early did we announce early decision 1 decisions tomorrow 0 wow so those are gonna live in yes or we're we're in that cycle continuously but it starts with the entry of the new class and then of course the route the returning students and all the activity builds there are quarterly board meeting so that provide some structure there are monthly faculty meetings there's a structure around that I have regular meetings with students so I meet with the editors of the spectator I meet with the president vice president of student assembly on a regular basis a lot of informal meeting the students I have office hours once a week out so there there is a structure to some of my time and next semester when I am teaching nothing changing international on next semester I've told everybody you know from 1 to 4 on Wednesdays that's that's blocked but much of the time it just evolves depending on what's happening and so when I look at Mike if I look at just the last few days for example I was in New York on Friday for board meetings we had a big dinner Friday night for 1812 leadership donor group which was a tremendous success record number people were there Saturday we have all kinds of events and activities for the alumni who were there for the weekend culminating with a big dance party which David Solomon our trusty and would have thought that was the Max and we had a waiting list so that you know that was the weekend on Monday I had a meeting in New York City with the New York 6 presidents we were looking at issues of a title 9 because there are some regulatory changes were expect we're expecting we're talking about how each of our campuses is focused on wellness and dealing with mental health issues sure and and then back to campus you know and I I had meetings with faculty who have you know concerned about particular things student meetings frequently I'll be meeting with one or another of the senior staff it might be with the Martinez around some student life issues could be with Joe Shelley around technology librarian at data issues all kinds of issues we had a senior staff meeting today we we typically have a senior staff meeting every week so there's they're all kinds of things and then things just pop up completely out of the blue that you never expected yeah when senator Joe brown's office said Hey you know we're gonna be near which like us to come to campus which of course of course right that was an opportunity but it came up we weren't expecting it you have to plan for it so things are happening all the time and 98 percent of our great and then there's some you know and they're the ones that you really wish hadn't happened sure you know I have to deal with them in some was probably 1 of the first people out the door that's great so it's interesting I imagine that the road to being a college president can take many forms what was that path like for you at what point did it start to become clear that this was something that you hope to do and what were your experiences leading up to that that gives you the skill set that I see every day to do this so well how did you get here what kind of you there's no single or linear path to becoming a college president and lots of people from lots of different walks of life and death as head of colleges you know I'd spent a good chunk of my career in higher education but also practiced law for 910 years in the private sector I serve in government as a director yeah on the staff of the National Security Council so I had a riding experiences but in my academic career I had worked closely with for 5 different university presidents I work very closely with 3 presidents at Cornell in my role as vice provost for international relations there I worked closely with the president of the university of Minnesota so I had an opportunity to see those rolls up close now those are much larger institutions but in many respects the rules are quite similar and and it was fascinating it was clear that these were challenging jobs that there's a lot of responsibility when things don't go well they feel a lot of pressure but there are also opportunities to really do some wonderful things in their contribute add to this the success of an institution that I think has had such a tremendous impact on so many lives in so that's to me was very appealing and so I knew you know at some point in my academic career that this is something I wanted to do that this is this was an aspiration and when I I was at a point at the university of Minnesota when we had the just wrapped up as you say you're in love yeah yeah it we had it to alumni speak at the 18 top leadership dinner this this weekend on Saturday and they they're married they met on on track they were both on track the track team together and they said they fell in love running around love field which which was which is great so I I didn't I didn't fall in love running around the field but being part of this community and just seeing what our what our students our faculty and our staff do on a daily basis and and see what our alumni are getting to know them and not knowing how passionate they are about I think back to where we were at this time in December we were just launching our because Hamilton campaign right and we had 190 $1000000 in hand so the usual way you approach a campaign there's a quiet phase where you amass a nucleus find and you make an assessment about what you think you can raise and and you start deciding what are the priorities for which you're seeking to raise money and so we are going through that process and we launched the campaign at last year's 1812 leadership we can't write and we had 190 $1000000 in hand I think we're at 260 8000000 now so it's been from that standpoint it tremendously successful year doesn't mean we're gonna have a lot of work to do on this campaign we absolutely do yeah we're kind of right on the time line that we set for ourselves but it's been incredibly rewarding to see that response from our community that you know their love for the college and their willingness to support the cods so that's been wonderful you know those incredible students that I mentioned you know I just had lunch in the dining hall with with 3 of them through the freshman and it was really gratifying to hear the experience that they've had you know 1 of them said you know I love it in every way it's been better than high school and and I'm learning so much and they're talking about the courses that they're taking the faculty that happened the friends they've made on campus and I think that experience you know you hear I hear from students all the time so it's been a very you know very good year from that standpoint faculty as always are doing a terrific teaching and research it's really been an exciting year as it it was most years are we made some significant progress around strategic plan initiatives as you know the first 18 months or so I was here and we're expecting new regulations new title 9 regulations to be released imminently yep that's one of things that New York 6 presidents were discussing on Monday at the department of education has been working on this for quite some time we and many other institutions I got they got 124000 or so comments it was just a just a ton of comments on these new regulations we have some pretty serious everyone want during we can to be in a respectful and supportive for the students who are going through this so we need will need some time to work that out and we can get out to see the final year it's a new decade its electioneering yeah so you talked about polarization can you through that lens talk about what your hopes are for our community as we approach an election year yeah it's it's gonna be a stressful period and we saw that in 2016 there was a lot of anxiety a lot of you know concerned about where the election was headed but also where the country was headed things were being said an election campaign that I think force allowed people to reassess how much progress we have are actually have not made in many areas whether it's diversity and inclusion you know how we respond to people who are non citizens will a lot of a lot of issues were raised a view point that I disagree with instead of taking the time to get to understand that person and and perhaps understand what's shaping their viewpoint and maybe helping them see the some considerations that they hadn't taken into account that might lead them to shift that viewpoint you know we try to do this a little bit when we had StoryCorps come to campus right in the spring they have this program one small step is here now and repair units with either other students with different political viewpoints or with members of the community and much of the conversation at the beginning was structured around questions like how did you come to form your political beliefs and what were the were the events in your life that help shape your attitudes and so they got those participating in the conversations got to know each other as people first and when that happens it's easier to have conversations on topics that are sensitive and if we aren't able to have those conversations were not able to address issues that are sensitive then we're not gonna be able to make progress on those issues that were simply condemning out of hand then you you know that's not a persuasive I thank him for someone else so if we really want to make change in some of these areas I think it's important for us to understand where people with whom we disagree are coming from doesn't we have to agree doesn't mean we shouldn't condemn certain viewpoints if they're you know racist or sexist or in other ways offensive we should but we also need to understand how do we opportunities as well absolutely one of the things that I really appreciate about you is that you have a really helpful way of communicating that allows the nuance of recognizing that you personally have values that you try to uphold in your everyday work but also that there are priorities and necessities of running a college that still need to be taken into account and that you can parse both of those things out how do you do that so it's not always not always easy you know I view my role as representing the college on issues that affect it directly so on higher education issues I'm willing to and have spoken out on daca for example and I'm also willing to speak out on individual on issues that are important to me and fall within my area of expertise so I recently joined the board of advisors the other Advisory Council of refugees international that's an organization that works to assist displaced persons around the world and I think they do terrific work it's an area that falls within my subject area of expertise I teach international on human rights I've worked on refugee issues for a long time you know I did that to some extent as a lawyer in private practice and I encountered these issues when I was on the National Security Council staff now I encounter them in my writing and my teaching so there's an area where I feel I can speak as at in my professorial capacity and I will be you know they said teaching this spring and so I'm going to address those issues there are other issues where I don't think I should take a position political issues because I don't think the college should have a position as such I think all the individual members of our community should have positions that on them having said that to say that we are a non partisan institution we're not a political institution is not to say that were an institution that values free right we have values that are important to us as a community so we want a community that's welcoming and respectful for all of its members it's got to be a community in which all of our students can thrive and that's you know that's critically important to us and so we have to find ways to make sure that those values are foregrounded here the college doesn't take a stance on general political issues we're not gonna take a stance on tax policy unless it directly affects the college sure and there is a tax that does right right so the excise tax that was included in the 2017 tax act you know and I've been going around Capitol Hill lobbying on that issue because that's 1 that directly affects the college I wouldn't will be lobbying on a broader tax policy even though I as an individual and as a citizen sure that may have strong feelings about it mmhm and that's the distinction that I tried to draw it's not always perfect is 9 it doesn't always mean you know come down neatly on a given issue it's sometimes frustrating to people I mean I'm often asked to sign group letters of various kinds that's that that's the test I try to apply them in deciding am I going to sign this letter is this an issue that directly affects the colleges students its operations higher education or is an issue that struck within my area of expertise now on the former I'm willing to sign as president of Hamilton on the latter I'm of politics what are things that you're looking forward to for Hamilton and in your work so we have some ambitious goals for the college you know we're making progress on our strategic plan we've identified our campaign priorities this is gonna be a critical year towards moving forward with the number of those priorities if you look at the first and biggest priority in the campaign and I'd say for me as president it's supporting financial aid and making sure that we can remain need blind institution this past weekend we celebrate the tenth anniversary of Hamilton's decision to go need blind and it was a wonderful was a wonderful moment the college's history it shows that were because he cares about access and affordability that we want to recruit the very best students to Hamilton that we don't want me to be a barrier to that and since we made that decision 10 years ago and I can't say you know how much is because you know how much is this correlation but there's no question that our applicant pools gotten much richer and deeper and stronger and more diverse since making that decision and you've seen the results in in in the numbers we've just been getting better and stronger applicants each year and it's been great for us and were I think a stronger and more interesting community as a result so it's a really important priority for the college it's you know and financial aid generally is incredibly important for the college fewer and fewer families can't afford the full cost of a Hamilton education teacher and so the biggest pillar of our fundraising campaign is for financial aid it's to allow us to sustain this commitment that we've made to all our prospective students in our current students if you are able to be admitted here if you apply as a freshman applicant to come here in the fall we're gonna make sure that we give you a financial aid package that makes it possible for you to attend Hamilton and over 50 percent of our students are on financial aid that number's growing means our discount rate is growing that's true of our peers and so to me to make this all work we need to raise additional money to support financial aid so that's a big priority that's something I'm I'm hoping to make a lot of progress on this year we know we have other priorities that are both in the campaign in part and coming out of our strategic plan one of them is the digital Hamilton initiative a lot of exciting work being done on that we've hired a number of terrific new faculty estimate we're hiring some other positions in technology we are hoping to build a center for emerging technologies we have a faculty committee that is working on what what kinds of curricular another changes might be associated what kinds of things might this initiative allow us to do and how we realize those so so that's something that we really need to flush out over the coming year but really it's you think about it the financial aid piece in the blind those are about who can come to Hamilton College and we want the best qualified people to be able to come regardless of need the digital initiative is what happens when they get here we've been around for you know for well over 200 years our curriculum is constantly changing what we teach and how we teach is constantly changing were an inflection point society when technology and data and analytics machine learning and artificial intelligence and all these developments are kind of coming together in ways that are transforming not just every industry but every field of research and now our students are equipped to navigate in a very different and and fast changing world so we're hoping to make a lot of progress around that and then another big issue that if it comes out of our if we can implement it well will really make a difference in the student experience it'll help students be better prepared for life both during and after Hamilton it'll help them more effectively
