counting centre is having on the alcohol awareness week certainly November 5 through twelfth is alcohol awareness week on our campus here in Hamilton a number of different groups and organizations are contributing to the program some of the things that we are doing to the counseling center or related to the peer advising program a program that I supervise where students are educating their peers about issues of importance for college students alcohol and substance use is obviously one of those things now one of the the things that you're telling me about before is it is it advising and peer involvement is very important and colleges we know that one of the most significant influences on the development of college students is the influence and impact of their peers and so we were looking to use that influence and impact in a positive and productive way advising is a program that we started about 5 years ago we're looking to educate college students about issues of importance to them so they can make the best decisions possible and maximize their college experience have healthy and productive lifestyles and and about 25 students volunteer their time without paying credit to be able to educate their peers what is the the influence of alcohol and colleges in college campuses more specifically here Hamilton verbal physical assaults all those kinds of things happen on college campuses which makes for an environment that we don't think is very healthy or productive and we look to have people examine their alcohol and substance use see how it fits into their life and make maybe some better choices about that use
